Characteristics of the Family Function of Retired Officers by FACES III -Factor structure and changes of family function-

Abstract
Background:
@EN The circumplex model of family function was designed by Olson from system theory abut family. Family Adaptation and Cohesion Evaluation Scale(FACES) was developed as the scale of family function and its clinical utility has been improved as
FACES
III. In the structural family therapy FACES III has been used to estimate the change of circumplex types.
After validity and reliability of FACES III were certified in Korea, it has been applied to know how the family function influences in the treatment of disease. However, to find out characteristics of Korean family function it is necessary to
study
factor structure of FACES III and changes of family function to family life cycles.
@ES Method:
@EN Subjects were conviniently obtained from patients who visited Korean armed forces general hospital from July to August in 1992. They were 154 and retired colonel or general. FACES III and Family satisfaction scale(FS) were completed by them.
Factor
analysis and X* test were conducted. Family life cycles of subjects were stage 3,4 and 5 by modified Duvall's classification.
@ES Results:
@EN Olson regarded the result of factor analysis of their subjects as the cohesion(factor 1)and the adaptability(factor 2). When this study was compared to Olson's study, 'discipline and control' subitems which had belonged to factor 2 in Olson's
study,
belonged to factor 1 rather than factor 2.
The family adaptability had no changes through the stage 3,4 and 5 of family life cycles. However, the family cohesion decreased significantly from stage 4 to stage 5.
@ES Conclusions:
@EN In Korean family, the discipline and control of their children were influenced by the family cohesion decreased significantly from stage 4 to stage 5.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN In Korean family, the discipline and control of their children were influenced by the family cohesion rather than the adaptability. The family cohesion decreased significantly after the last child leaves.
